Symptoms

First of all, if you do snore, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have sleep apnea. Take our quiz to help you determine if you think you have sleep apnea.

Some of the symptoms of sleep apnea are easier to detect than others. One way to detect some of the more obvious symptoms is to ask someone who has seen you sleeping. They should look for the classic signs of sleep apnea. The loud, heavy snoring, followed by periods of not breathing or gasping for air, which end up with the loud "snort".

Other symptoms can be felt by the sufferer themselves.
  • excessive daytime drowsiness, daytime fatigue
  • the need for frequent naps
  • a reduced ability to concentrate, difficulty concentrating
  • memory problems
  • having trouble functioning at work or decreased work performance
  • irritability or a short temper
  • edema(swelling) over the whole body
  • impotence or decreased sexual interest(reduced libido)
  • depression, hyperactivity or anxiety
  • changes in moods or behavior
  • reduction in motivation
  • hallucinations
  • frequent accidents
  • headaches in the morning
  • waking frequently during the night sometimes with the need to urinate
  • suddenly waking with a feeling of being disorientated
  • loud snoring
  • chest pulls in during sleep in young children
  • high blood pressure
  • a dry mouth upon awakening
  • excessive perspiring during sleep
  • heartburn
  • insomnia
  • restless sleep
  • limb jerking during sleep

As the condition progresses it puts you at risk for certain, more serious symptoms. The more serious symptoms require tests by your doctor. These symptoms can include high blood pressure and heart disease. These conditions require immediate attention and treatment should never be delayed for any reason.
