Definitions

 

  • Adenoidectomy- a surgery that removes the adenoids, usually done with a Tonsillectomy
  • Apnea- slowed or stopped breathing
  • Arrhythmia- an irregular heartbeat

  • Cardiomyopothy- diseases affecting the heart muscle (myocardium); these diseases usually result in the inadequate heart pumping

  • Cor Pulmonale- enlargement of the right ventricle of the heart, that occurs because of pulmonary hypertension
  • CPAP -"Continuous Positive Airway Pressure"- a type of respiratory therapy using a gentle positive air pressure to keep airways open during sleep
  • Drowsiness- the irresistible urge to fall asleep at inappropriate times
  • ECG- "electrocardiogram"-a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart muscle, similar to an EKG
  • Edema- an excessive build up of fluid in the tissues
  • Hypoxia- persistent low levels of oxygen in the blood
  • Lethargy- the feeling of being very tired or weary
  • Myocarditis- inflammation of the heart muscle
  • Obese- someone who is 25% overweight based on height

  • Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome- A group of symptoms characterized by massive obesity, flushed face, frequent short episodes of irresistible sleep throughout the day, and disturbed sleep at night

  • Pickwickian Syndrome- a common name for Obesity hypoventilation syndrome, named after the character "Fat Joe" in the Charles Dickens novel "The Pickwick Papers"

  • Pulmonary Hypertension- a disorder in which the blood pressure in the pulmonary (lung) arteries is abnormally high in the absence of other diseases of the heart or lungs
  • REM-"rapid eye movement"- a stage of sleep where dreaming occurs along with generalized muscle paralysis with the exception of the diaphragm and eyes
  • Sleep Apnea- periods of stopped breathing, lasting 10 seconds or longer, that occur during sleep
  • Somnolence- an extreme form of drowsiness
  • T & A- a Tonsillectomy and a Adenoidectomy performed at the same time
  • Tonsillectomy- a surgery that removes the tonsils from the back of the throat
  • Tracheotomy- a small hole surgically cut into the trachea to provide an airway
  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty- "UPPP"- a surgery that removes excess tissue from the back of the throat
